PROBLEM
The system automatically logs in. By the time the desktop opens I expected the mouse pointer to be there. There was no mouse pointer but I was able to track the mouse by using the Ctrl key. If I right clicked the menu would come up. In fact all mouse buttons were working. There was just no mouse pointer visible but the mouse was there. The first time this happened I updated the system and the mouse pointer became visible.

When I turned off the system and turned it on again the mouse pointer
was not visible. I tried going on appearance and selecting a different
pointer - no change.

I opened terminal sudo apt-get update and the mouse pointer became
visible again. This happened the second time I restarted as well. The
only way I can get the mouse pointer to become visible is by opening the
terminal and running the sudo apt-get update command.
