[Bug 533639] Re: Samsung SyncMaster 920N monitor resolution not correctly detected
Yes, sounds likely to be a broken monitor emitting incorrect EDID
information. It looks like you're using a configuration where
modesetting is done by the kernel rather than X so reassigning to the
kernel. Probably there is a quirk for your monitor in the xserver which
wasn't taken into the kernel.
The steps for troubleshooting this class of problem are well documented
at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/ on the Troubleshooting and Quirks guides;
in particular you should gather an EDID dump. The docs explain some
common issues with monitor EDID that you can examine.
