Binary package hint: xorg

Hi, I need you help - to help you.

yesterday I did this, trying to generate a new config.org - I think on ubuntu 9.10:
1. sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop
2. sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
3. sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start

Yesterday step 2 aborted with an error, today I tried to make a screen
shot, but I cannot. Today in 9.10 and(!) 10.4 "nothing" happens - no
error, but also not new xorg.config is generated. So please help me what
to do to give you any hint.

Currently, I do not have any xorg.config in 9.10 (once I renamed the
file due to some screensaver-researches & I am booting since that time
without xorg.config due to less problems) AND in 10.4 (the fresh
installation did not generate any xorg.config-file).

So I was trying to generate a new xorg-config-file (checking if the
screensaver-prob [URL: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source
/xserver-xorg-video-ati/+bug/528209] would disappear in 10.4), but it
does not work. - Thanks for your help!
