[Bug 536793] [NEW] InstallArchives() Failed. package nvidia-glx-173 (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: subprocess new pre-installation script returned error exit status 2

Public bug reported:

When trying to install nvidia drivers in Ubuntu 9.10, whether through
envyng or Ubuntu's Proprietary hardware wizard, this error occurs. When
ORIGINALLY installing the drivers, there were no errors. After a couple
of days with no modifications, the computer would only boot into low
graphic mode and is returning these errors even after attempting to
purge all data/settings with $sudo apt-get purge nvidia*
