3)After the splash screen the screen should go blank and start a graphic
mode showing login screen.

4)After the splash, screen goes blank/black (still on/blacklit) and the
system freezes. No known (ctrl+alt+del, ctrl+alt+backspc, alt+Fkeys,
ctrl+alt+Fkeys) "rescue"  keys work. Hard reset must be used.

Luckly there still was ATI installer on my hdd. Reinstalling driver from
recovery shell solved the problem. Probably when updating kernel new
module is not being installed.

I have xubuntu-desktop package installed, latest ATI drivers installed.
The automatic update consisted of several more packages (including some
for XOrg and other i cant recall) besides the kernel update.
