Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

tried both ubuntu and kubuntu lucid 64bit install cd as well as an
installed Kubuntu. Flickering starts upon the very first splash and
continues to shutdown. Even TTYs with no x running flicker, and the
flickering is more visible when composition is active. unsuccessful fsck
attempts on boot as well.
