[Bug 554411] [NEW] X11 escape CTRL-ALT-BS no longer works in 9.x version of ubuntu
Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: xorg
Prior to ubuntu 9.04, the CTRL-ALT-BS sequence worked fine. Hit those
three magic keys, and the X Server would instantly die, saving you from
some runaway X11 program... and also offering a very fast convenient way
to crash-logout of X Window.
For some unknown reason, this sequence no longer works. Doesn't matter
if it's on a USB or PS/2 keyboard.
All I can say is, right now, I'm glad my primary home computer still
runs Ubuntu 8.04 LTS, though at work I use Ubuntu 9.10 and have to worry
about some website causing the browser or Adobe Flash to freak out and
kill my system, where CTL-ALT-BS could have saved it (or ssh into the
machine from another computer, but that's a little crazy).
I've been using that key sequence for over 14 years, and to have it
suddenly not work anymore. I'm sure some idiot developer thought nobody
uses that key sequence anymore, and disabled it. Well, it's still used,
and still needed. Especially if you're a software developer, and
accidentally do something that causes the window manager to go nuts...
CTL-ALT-BS would save the system form having to do a cold reboot, and
save a lot of time. And lets not even talk about running some windows
programs in Wine... most work, but every now and then....
