[Bug 565141] Re: visual effects very slow on ATI x1950

I just tried the LiveCD for Ubuntu 9.10 64bit and have no problems
regarding any 3D acceleration including the visual effects set to
"normal".

glxgears gives me 23'000 frames per 5 seconds in 9.10.
glxgears gives me 70 frames per average 6 seconds in 10.04.

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xorg

Having an ATI x1950 and activating any visual effects on Lucid Beta 2
will result in very slow performance making the system unusable.

My laptop has an ATI x1400 and currently setting visual effects to
"normal" results in smooth performance afterwards. My main computer
however runs an ATI x1950 which seems to be detected but runs extremely
slow on normal visual effects settings. My main computer also has MS
Windows, where 2d and 3d acceleration works without any problems, so I
assume there aren't any basic hardware problems.

The slowdown manifests itself when "normal" visual effects are selected:
When moving, minimizing or maximizing windows the computer screen and
gnome controls hangs 2-3 seconds before displaying the next frame, and
additional frames have to be waited for to get gnome to respond to
  another user input.
-
- I never tried Ubuntu on my machine with the current hardware
- configuration before. So I don't know if this an older issue or recently
- introduced.
