[Bug 565390] Re: [i855gme] regression: dri disabled

The instability bugs you are referring to are bug 541492 and bug 541511.
It seems that most people on i845 and i855 experience freezes.

DRI is disabled from latest xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.9.1-3ubuntu3.
As a workaround you may use one of the older packages from
/var/cache/apt/packages or you can use the one that is currently in my
standard PPA: https://launchpad.net/~gomyhr/+archive/standard .

I think this is a candidate for a WONTFIX, but I will leave it open for two reasons:
- If more people with 855GME show up and says they never had freeze problems (use the Does this bug affect you? link) that may mean that 855GME is not affected and we may try to not disable DRI on this variant
- It may be possible to disable DRI by default in such a way that the option DRI "on" in xorg.conf is honoured (it is not now). This may be a valid request.

If you feel like doing some heavy testing and are able to patch and
compile the kernel, you may look at the upstream bug report
http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=27187 for a couple of
patches that has been used to test and reveal the hardware problems that
causes this, even on systems where it is not apparent during normal use.
If your tests show that your 855GME does not have the problems that
855GM and 852GM has, we may want to enable DRI on 855GME.
