I understand that you need the reports from the original reporter, but
I'm getting similar, if not the same problem.

On a fresh install of 9.10, the external display button on my hp dm3z
worked fine.  With a vga monitor attached, I could hit fn+f4 and it
would go between laptop only, laptop+external, external.

Somewhere in 9.10 the button stopped working ,and it's not fixed in
10.04 RC.   I'll be happy to fill out another bug report if that's the
correct course to go down.
