Thanks Aaron!

Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic /w updates presently has X at 1.7.  from "dpkg -l |
grep xorg":

  ii  xserver-xorg                          1:7.4+3ubuntu10
the X.Org X server

So, I'm guessing I just need to download the latest 96.43.16 drivers
(vs. the 96.43.13 I presently have installed) and install them manually?
Or is Karmic's latest X.org X Server still too old?
