[Bug 575255] [NEW] unable to access tty using ctrl-alt-F1 lucid

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Using Lucid,

When pressing ctrl-alt-F1 the machine trys to enter the virtual console,
but I am unable to see it. All that happens is that mouse pointer
disappears and I am left with a non-responsive gnome desktop until I
press ctrl-alt-F7. sometimes the machine will not go back to the F7 tty
screen and I have to reboot.
