[Bug 576148] [NEW] Login screen (gdm) garbled on start up after upgrade to 10.04 LTS

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

After booting, I get an garbled screen (in text mode?) but there is a
mouse cursor that can be moved (but not much else). If I switch to a
different virtual terminal (Ctrl-Alt-F1), I get a black (but bright)
screen with no login prompt. Now I press Ctrl-Alt-F7 and then the gdm
login screen shows up properly.

I am also unable to perform "switch user" sometimes (resulting in a
blank screen with the mouse cursor). I do not know if these two things
are related.
