[Bug 580449] [NEW] X often crashes when starting xmoto levels (Intel GM965: i915 GPU hung)

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

When starting a level in XMoto (0.5.3 src package), X crashes and falls
back to GDM login screen.

This doesnt always happen, but in ~70% of cases.

Syslog is telling afterwards:
May 14 12:31:26 schlepp kernel: [ 7462.920032] [drm:i915_hangcheck_elapsed] *ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed... GPU hung
May 14 12:31:26 schlepp kernel: [ 7462.920045] render error detected, EIR: 0x00000000
May 14 12:31:26 schlepp kernel: [ 7462.920057] [drm:i915_do_wait_request] *ERROR* i915_do_wait_request returns -5 (awaiting 2399654 at 2399648)

Xmoto and also other games like SuperTux2 show another bad behaviour:
While playing, the Brightness OSD of my Thinkpad (Lenovo R61e) keeps on beeing displayed, where every refresh of its display goes along with a short stalling of rendering in the games. I guess this is connected to the problem.
