[Bug 585689] [NEW] hard freeze just before ubuntu splash screen

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

At about 1 in 5 times I get a hard freeze when booting Ubuntu Lucid: it
happens exactly when the system tries to switch to the splash screen. I
can see some funny red symbols at the top of the screen when it freezes,
so it looks to me like it's an xorg problem. It's a hard freeze, so I
need a power cycle to resume.

My computer is a Dell Inspiron 9400 and I have an ATI Radeon card. At
this point, I would be happy just to have a workaround, is there any way
I can avoid these freezes?
