[Bug 594203] [NEW] blank screen and system unresponsive after gdm login

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

On maverick after upgrading all packages (using aptitude safe-upgrade) I can no longer log in any gnome session if the system was started normally.
Using failsafeX from the recovery prompt and logging in does allow me to reach a desktop.
