You may have already done this, but this may help
1) do not use xorg-server 1.9 (1.8.99...), NVidia proprietary dirvers do not support it yet
2) reinstall nvidia-current_256.35_0ubuntu2
3) run in terminal: sudo nvidia-xconfig

Otherwise,
does your graphics card support new nvidia drivers
and
do you have a fully upgraded/updated maverick-alfa2 installed
and what other PPA's are you using if any?
