I have an old Compaq Evo 32bit Intel system with a Matrox G450 AGP video
board (G45FMDHA32DB 971-0302). It is a dualhead video board with the
main output spec'd to 2048x1536 and the secondary output spec'd to
1600x1200.

The issue is that if I perform a GNOME login, the upper and lower bars
of the display are completely offscreen (only the background and mouse
are visible), with the result that I can't get to any GUI menu to do
anything. If I perform a failsafe GNOME login, the upper and lower bars
are visible, but the display resolution is limited to 800x600 and can't
be enlarged.
