[Bug 533269] Re: External display not working

Update:

I've found that there seems to be a maximum width (and height) to the
combined desktop.

My external monitor is 1600x900, and my laptop's screen is 1024x600.
External monitor is on the left.

I can set my monitors to 800x600+1024x600 with no problems.

If I set them to 1280x720+1024x600, I am left with a black bar at the
bottom of my stretched external monitor, and the right half of the
screen is black on my laptop monitor. The mouse cursor draws on these
black areas when it's next to them, but I can't move the mouse cursor
into them. My panels are on the laptop monitor, but cut off on the
right side. If I align the monitors in Monitor Preferences so that the
tops align, both of the panels are vertically situated correctly, but if
I align their bottoms, the lower panel disappears and the right monitor
is cut off on the right and bottom (so it's just a square aligned with
the upper-right of the laptop monitor.)

Same for 1280x800+1024x600. The black spaces are all bigger.

Same for 1280x960+1024x600, and 1600x900+1024x600. Telling Monitor
Preferences that the monitor is on the right and the laptop is on the
left does about the same thing, except my monitor is no longer stretched
horizontally, it just draws black space on the right.

If I press Fn+F5, the laptop Function key to change extended desktop
setup, my external monitor works fine, but my panels are missing. They
seem to be drawn off-screen, because Alt+F1 doesn't bring them up. My
laptop monitor is black, but the cursor draws on it if I move it to the
right edge of the external monitor, though I can't actually move the
cursor into my laptop monitor. According to Monitor Preferences, which
updates every time I press Fn+F5, the laptop monitor is on with a
resolution of 1024x600. Odd, because I get different results described
above if I set this up manually in Monitor Preferences.

If you need me to post any more information, please let me know.
