[Bug 642257] [NEW] Compiz effects not functioning at all in Maverick beta, w/ i855

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

Hello
My Compiz desktop effects are not functioning at all after upgrading from Lucid 10.04 LTE to Maverick beta. In Lucid, I had no problems with Compiz whatsoever. I'm using: Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat (beta / development branch) with kernel 2.6.35-ppa20+v9+cursorfix-generic. The problem also occurs when I use kernel 2.6.35-21. My CCSM and Simple Compiz managers are installed and functioning properly. I'm using a Dell 700m with an Intel 855GM graphics card.

Here's what I've tried:
1. In Appearance properties, the default desktop/visual effects setting was on 'None'. The system will not allow me to enable ANY desktop effects.
2. I've tried enabling compiz --replace in a terminal window, but it keeps 'falling back' to my default composite manager.
3. I've removed and reinstalled compiz, to no avail.
4. I've created an xorg.conf file in the /etc/X11 folder, to no avil.

As a newbie myself, any help would be appreciated. Please let me know
if you'd like me to provide any more details.

Thanks!
