[Bug 647488] [NEW] when xorg starts, screen is corrupted
Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: xorg
I have a thinkpad T40 with a radeon mobility 7500.
On Sep 11 2010 I dist-upgraded my Ubuntu 10.10 and rebooted without any
problems, shut it off an didn't use it anymore.
On Sep 25 2010 I did the same, rebooted, and then after normal boot the
login screen is either black or has a few lines of pixels. System is
very unstable, after a few alt-ctrl-f1 and so on, the system freezes.
I have tried kernels 2.6.35-17, -20 and -22, plus a 2.6.36-rc5 from
kernel-ppa. All behave the same.
Doing FN-F7 (the switcher between internal/external screen) once most of
the times give a working screen. After login it's black/corrupted again,
FN-F7 workaround works again. I saw the machine freeze a couple of
times, seems generally unstable.
Booting with "nomodeset" makes everything work as normal without any
noticable stability problems. Doing the bug reporting on it now.
