[Bug 659056] [NEW] Input gone during upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

At some point during the upgrade, I could no longer use the keyboard and
mouse. I dug up an old PS/2 Keyboard but that didn't work either.
Luckily, I was prepared for this by using screen so I could finish the
upgrade over ssh. Also, `sudo X :1` took the monitors out of sleep mode.

When I run `sudo cat /dev/input/event4` I can see garbage from the USB
keyboard and when I do that with /dev/input/event5 I see garbage from
the PS/2 keyboard. Also, /dev/input/mice shows garbage when I move the
mouse.

I also tried remoting in using vino and x11vnc but that failed,
apparently something I did caused X.org to hang in a busy loop and
clients can no longer connect. I wanted to run another X.org instance so
I ran X -configure and the command it gave me. That didn't work and I
could only kill it from another shell (^C and ^Z did nothing). The old
config wouldn't work because the nvidia kernel module is older then the
X.org driver.

I guess the steps to reproduce at this point are:
1. Install Ubuntu 10.04 and log in
2. Run `do-release-upgrade -d` and let it do its job
3. Unplug keyboard (and mouse)
4. ????? (go do something else)
5. Plug keyboard back in (sorry, no profits in this procedure)

I'm not sure if 3 and 5 are neccesary but I switch between PC's using a
monitor as USB hub for my input devices.
