[Bug 664470] [NEW] Unwanted copy/paste-like text duplication when selecting text with touchpad.

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics

Ubuntu 10.10
xserver-xorg-input-synaptics:
  Installed: 1.2.2-2ubuntu5
  Candidate: 1.2.2-2ubuntu5
HP Pavilion dv6720 Laptop

Sometimes when selecting text in an editable window (office document,
email, web form, the text I'm typing here, etc) by holding down the left
touchpad button and then sweeping over the desired text using the pad,
the selected text is automatically duplicated and tacked on to the
initial selection before you've done anything else (fingers still in
same position on touchpad from sweeping over text). It is as if the text
is being automatically copied and pasted to the same point - but why?.
The text doesn't however actually go into the clipboard, because if you
do CTRL V you get your last selection of text which you really copied,
not the random/falsely generated text..

Something to do with the synaptics touchpad special effects (zones,
altering pressure, multi-finger etc)? I haven't turned these ON or
played them though.

It seems to be totally random, happening about 1 in 20 text selections.
I have experimented with it a lot trying to reproduce the behaviour by
altering my sweeping finger pressure and action. I have tried to double
click at the end of the sweep, change pressure, change the area on the
pad, use multiple fingers, change speed etc. but nothing seems to induce
it - it just happens annoyingly from time to time!
