Binary package hint: xkeyboard-config

On my newly aquired "Logitech Internet 1500 Laser Cordless Desktop"'s
keyboard it has eight 'special buttons' along the top.

These are: Music, Calculator, Mail, Home ----------- Play/Pause, Volume
Up, Volume Down, Mute

My experience is that of these is that:
 - the "Music" button does not load the music player specified in System->Preferences-> Preferred Applications (but the other three left hand side buttons work)
 - the "Play/Pause" button does not work in Rhythmbox or Banshee (but the other sound related right hand side buttons work)
