How to enable Gnome Metacity compositing.
The compiz effects are CPU hogs on some PC's.
To get light weight effects remove special effects the normal way.

Then type the following in a terminal.
gconftool-2 -s /apps/metacity/general/compositing_manager --type bool true
Uses a lot less CPU cycles.
