Please try downloading a making a cd of a completely different distro from a different family of linux
http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=wolvix
Wolvix Hunter 1.1.0 is smaller and should make a better cd, especially at low burn-speed. Here's some other advice to help with making a cd
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto
It sounds like you are trying the right thing to boot up the Ubuntu Cd. Ubuntu's default option to "Try Ubuntu without making changes to the machine" should get you to a working desktop. Similarly wolvix's default should also get you to a working desktop, in each case we call it a "LiveCd session", wolvix doesn't gve it a fancy title and just uses an old splash screen without a menu but other than that it works the same way. Here's a guide on how to boot from a Cd although it sounds like you're doing all this right already
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootFromCD
Ubuntu's LiveCd session should allow you to surf in firefox straight-away but in Wolvix you'll need to use their control panel to set up the network. It's fairly easy from the "crossed spanner & screwdriver" icon on the bottom taskbar, just change "down" to "up" and then click on "restart network". Then firefox should work in the wolvix LiveCd session.

I think the problem might be that Ubuntu is too large for your machine
and that's probably why Vista is so desperately slow. However, it might
also be some sort of hardware incompatibility issue with Ubuntu. Trying
wolvix will help us to see if it is one of these two types of issue and
might even help us work out a way to get Ubuntu working on your machine.

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
