Tom proposed the following answer:
When you boot up the machine do you get one option for booting into
Windows and one for booting into Ubuntu or do you get lots of options
for booting into Ubuntu and also have an option for "memtest"?  Don't
actually do the memtest, it takes ages, but please let us know if you
have the option?
