Yes, but you can get to a LiveCd session by putting the 8.10 cd in the cd/dvd-drive and booting up the computer and then choosing the option "Try Ubuntu without changes to the machine"? I am not sure what to do from there but it feels like a small step forwards, especially as it should allow you to surf with firefox and access all you data. This guide might help if you have trouble getting that far
