Thanks, I'll try what you say.  I didn't know I could do that.  I'll let you know what happens.

This may sound dumb, but I'm past the point of caring, so do you think I
could format the hard drive from this 8.10 disk?  It's not that hard to
re-install the operating system and download all the updates.  However,
I would still have the problem with the Nvidia graphics card.  I've been
online and looked at possible Ubuntu solutions for the graphics card,
but most of them are beyond my expertise.  I have no idea if I could
yank this card out and install another card from a different
manufacturer.  I've done it many times on a desktop, but never on a
laptop.  What do you think?
