The vista boot is not of interest to us in any way.You already clarified
it works in root with networking.
for a quick fix try:
sudo ifup eth0; sleep 5; ifconfig eth0
If this doesnt resolve it, read on.
I have seen this a few times. Make sure you disable all wake on lan
stuff in the BIOS as well as in Vista. The Vista can put a 'lock' on the
hardware and make it not appear (annoying)
If you reboot and log in you can also run:
dmesg | less
and read the device coming up (if it does at all)
