Re: [Question #76331]: how much memory should I partition to run Unbutu as a dual boot?

Question #76331 on Ubuntu changed:

Tom proposed the following answer:
Hi :)

The term "memory" usually refers to ram & swap space (& sometimes cpu cache but lets ignore that one). Please tell us how much ram you have and how much hard-drive space and then we miht be able to help you better. Here's a guide tho :)
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SwapFaq

However, it's possible that you might be referring to how much hard-
drive space to give it and usually i would say that 15Gb is plenty to
give to Ubuntu as long as you store most of your data (movies, pictures,
documents etc) on the other distros space. The best way to install
Ubuntu is like this ...

Do you have an Ubuntu cd? Hopefully you can just put this in the cd/dvd-drive and boot up the computer. Then choosing the option "Try Ubuntu without changes to the machine" should get you to a working ubuntu desktop, we call this a "LiveCd session", if it works. Here's a guide if there's trouble getting to there
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootFromCD
You should find that firefox on the top taskbar is able to surf right into here from the LiveCd session :) From the LiveCd session you should see the installer icon in the top left-hand corner, this guide should help from there
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WindowsDualBoot

However it's also possible that you might be asking a question about how
much ram you need in order to run Ubuntu and the answer to that is just
512Mb but with 2Gb it would be a lot faster, not much point having more
than that but it's nice if you have it already ;)

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)
