Hello Rob,
There is has been debate about which desktop environment is better since
they appeared, but in the end is a matter of personal preference.
You will find similar applications in KDE as those found in Gnome, but
you can also use Gnome application in KDE and vice-versa.
You can have KDE and Gnome installed on the same computer, and you
select which session you want to start at (graphical) login. To install
KDE, you just type this:
sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop
I personally prefer KDE because I find it to be more customizable,
applications are richer and more functional. Gnome is too much
simplistic for my taste.
