actionparsnip proposed the following answer:
You should not be loggin on as root, nor should the account be enabled.

If you boot to the livecd you can run the memory test as well as fsck
the drives.

If you boot to root recovery mode can you make a new user then log in
with that?

The SATA port switch sounds like the port is faulty or dying.
