When do you get the message "broken pipe"? What exactly are you doing?

As for Thunderbird, to get it type

sudo apt-get thunderbird

and to start it, either type "thunderbird" into a terminal or search for
it in the system menu. What do you mean by you cannot get it up on the
desktop?
