I re-checked what we are doing and have spotted an error in the grub
install!  Please try this before rebooting the machine

sudo grub
root (hd0,6)
setup (hd0)
quit

Grub counts from 0 not from 1 so we need to make it point at what it
calls the 6th partition!  Hopefully it wont overwrite your menu.lst but
if it does we have the old backup we made a few days ago.  If it does
overwrite then hopefully it would manage to detect the other OS's this
time, but i don't think it will overwrite menu.lst.  The aim is to get
the bios stage of the boot to pass control over to the menu.lst that we
can edit easily, at the moment it's unclear exactly which menu the bios
passes control over to.  The command "setup (hd0) seems to be the
crucial part that overwrites the hard-drives mbr and fixes it to point
at the place "root (hd0,6)" has specified
