Ahhh, i think i've spotted it.  Did you miss out the / from in front of
"boot"?  That might be it.  If you really want to put it as one single
command then

gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst

should do the trick.  At first i used to think the ".lst" was a 1 in the
front but then i realised it was short for "list" lol
