I recommend connecting the TV and rebooting. Usually makes things nice.

If you have an Nvidia graphics card (Which I'm guessing not as most use
garbage intel things)

If not you will need to edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf to add the TV as an
extra display.

Here is a guide I fund. It may not be exact and you will be fightnig the
file until it looks ok:
