I guess the main trick to try in advance of doing the Windows install is to make sure your Ubuntu cd does get you to a LiveCd session from "Try Ubuntu without changes to this machine"

This should help because Firefox from there should be able to surf right
into here and elsewhere in case of troubles.  More importantly it gets
you to a good terminal console :)
