actionparsnip proposed the following answer:
ok then if you boot to a live CD you can use:

gksudo gparted

and remove all partitions from the drive you wish to use (BE CAREFUL!
This will destroy the data on those partitions)

When you run the installer it will see the device and off to use it to
install to. Read EVERYTHING you see so you are using the right disk.

If you like Mandrake I can recommend Kubuntu to you instead of Ubuntu as
it uses KDE as its default DE and is an officiail release from
Canonical.
