I haven't a clue what ro does.  Usually i think it makes thing "Read
Only" so if i had to guess then i would say it might set the kernel to
read only which would seem vital.

I just did exactly as the instructions at the bottom of the link on the
link you gave us said in order to get the verbose bootup every time with
having to dig around in editing the menu each time i boot up. :)
