Hi Leether,

First make sure to disable encryption and enable SSID broadcasting on
the wireless router. Make sure the SSID is not hidden. Also make sure
that wicd is not trying to use encryption as well.

Then try scanning for networks again using this command:

sudo iwlist scan

If that does not help either, I suggest booting from the following
LiveCD's to see which one works fine with your wireless chipset: Ubuntu
9.04 LiveCD, Mandriva Linux One 2009 Spring LiveCD and openSUSE 11.1
32-bit LiveCD.

The problem you are experiencing might be strictly limited to Ubuntu and
not other distributions.
