Ok, can you download Ubuntu from

and make a cd of it, i find the really cheap "Write once" cds better than more expensive kinds for this

I've seen this problem before, it's in the "Solved Answers" database
which you can look up in here but the main thing is that i don't think
you're making things worse by keeping using Ubuntu. It's late in my
country so i will try to remember to look this up tomorrow. Until then
make a cd if you can and also in your working Ubuntu try to create a new
user
System - Administration - Users&Groups
The new user should work normally
