Ok, to get to a command-line go up to the top taskbar and click on

Applications - Accessories - Terminal

and this should open an excellent terminal/command window/console.
Although there are many other ways to get to a command-line i find this
one is usually the best for most things.  It might even be worth addinga
launcher to panel ;)
