Re: [Question #78140]: How to make separate partitions for /home and filesystem directories at install 9.04

Question #78140 on Ubuntu changed:
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/78140

Tom proposed the following answer:
If you put the Ubuntu Cd in the cd/dvd-drive and reboot the machine you should get to a mneu with an option to "Try Ubuntu without changes to this machine", if not here's a helpful guide
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootFromCD

Choosing the "Try Ubuntu ... " default option should get you to a
working desktop which we call a "LiveCd session", if it works. The
LiveCd session is great for as a demo but more importantly in this case
it's great for finding out what opportunities we have to maximise
performance and stability. Also it should pick-up on your internet
connection so firefox should work from it's top taskbar :) However
anything you 'save' to the desktop or the normal Documents and such-like
will be forgotten when you reboot (although you can create a persistent
image if you must) - You can still save things to the hard-drive through
the "Places" menu and such-like.

In a LiveCd session please go up to the top taskbar and click on

Applications - Accessories - Terminal

Into the terminal/command window/console type

sudo fdisk -l

and paste the results into here if you would like us to suggest possible
good ways to layout your partitions. It would also be handy if you
could go up to the top taskbar and click on

System - Administration - Partition Editor

and just let us know the sizes of those partitions and unallocated
spaces in Gb (or Mb). Gparted is very powerful and can make everything
go horribly wrong quite quickly so it's best to avoid pressing "Apply"
unless you are certain about what you are doing. Tight now i'm only
interested in using it to scout-out the layout of your drive so just
close it without doing any of the actions it's capable of.

Thanks, good luck and regards from
Tom :)
