Tom proposed the following answer:
The fsck quick help cheat-sheet didn't give what i thought.  I just
tried it myself and think its worth avoiding using fsck to fix problems
on sdb1 until we sort this out.  Yes, fstab is notoriously tricky.
Hopefully AP or someone can help
