Sorry, the point was to see what happens when you press Ctrl or Shift.
If you press Ctrl and nothing happens, then it might be a hardware
problem (broken keyboard)? Can't you see something like this?

    state 0x0, keycode 50 (keysym 0xffe1, Shift_L), same_screen YES,
    XLookupString gives 0 bytes:
