Vadim Radionov gave more information on the question:
ps -ef | grep gdm

root 5813 [...] /usr/bin/gmd
root 6347 [...] /usr/bin/gmd

after killing them both and starting again with "sudo /etc/init.d/gdm
start" the switching between graphic and text mode continue; then "ps
-ef" show two instances of gdm again
