Larry Jordan proposed the following answer:
    You can use "source" software if you are brave enough.  It isn't always foolproof, but opens up other doors.  It just has to be written for Linux.
     You CAN use some *.exe or *.com files in Linux if you install a DOS emulator, such as dosbox, but not the ones that you have mentioned.  Old games and applications work fairly well.
