Have you installed all the necessary codecs ?
Goto Applications -> Add/Remove Programs
search for gstreamer and install the following:
GStreamer ffmpeg video plugin
GStreamer extra plugins
GStreamer plugins for mms, wavpack, quicktime, musepack
GStreamer plugins for aac, xvid, mpeg2, faad
GStreamer fluendo MPEG2 demuxing plugin
GStreamer Dirac video plugin
You really should not have any problem playing videos/audio after this
Also it may well be the case that the file you are playing might be broken. I have experienced problems with files that were only half downloaded and tried to play them in totem.
You could VLC Player as well from the same Add/Remove Programs
