Tom proposed the following answer:
After doing that you might need to fix broken packages.  Please go up to
the top taskbar and click on

System - Administration - Synaptic Package Manager

it asks for your normal user password, not your SuperUser/Root one.  In the "Edit" menu should be the option "Fix broken packages" and then just click on "Apply".
